Aluminium Balustrade & Handrails

Powder-coated aluminium balustrade and handrails for a commercial building.

The challenge: A commercial building needed external balustrade and handrails along a staircase and upper walkway. The specification was 1.0 m height to Australian standard, with a powder-coated finish to match the building's window frames. The existing concrete base had fixing holes that did not line up with the new post positions.

Our approach: We fabricated the posts and top rails from aluminium section, TIG welding the joints and grinding them smooth so the powder coat would cover cleanly. Rather than forcing the new posts onto old hole positions, we designed adjustable base plates and drilled new fixings into the concrete with chemical anchors. We pre-assembled panels in the workshop so on-site work was bolting and bracket adjustment.

The outcome: The balustrade met code height, sat plumb, and the powder coat matched the window frames within eye. The adjustable base plates meant no on-site welding to the concrete, and the walkway was handed over without touching the existing finishes. Building surveyor sign-off came on first inspection.

Scope & materials

Aluminium extrusion and flat bar, TIG welded joints ground smooth, factory powder-coat to match the building's window frames. Scope included adjustable base plates with chemical anchors, panel pre-assembly in the workshop, and on-site bolting to the existing walkway.
